David Stevenson is currently the Managing Director of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.
Mr. Stevenson joined the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in October 2010 as Director General responsible for health, nutrition and education programs in the Multilateral and Global Programs Branch. This includes oversight for Canada’s multilateral relations, Board membership, and support to the Global Fund, GAVI, UNAIDS, PMNCH, and SUN, as well as health and nutrition specific support to UNICEF, WHO and a number of international NGOs.
Before returning to Canada, he held a number of United Nations diplomatic senior executive positions with the World Food Programme including: Director of Policy and Strategy responsible for guiding WFP’s global policy and strategic reform process; Coordinator of Purchase for Progress leading the design and management of WFP’s flagship initiative to support local food production, markets and food processing; and WFP’s Representative in Zambia and Rwanda where he served extensively as acting UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator working to promote efficiency within the UN system.
In the 1990s, he worked in humanitarian operations throughout Africa. His assignments have involved relations with leaders of governments, multilateral agencies, NGOs, foundations and the private sector. He is a graduate of University of Calgary and Queens University in Canada, and has lectured at universities in Europe, Africa, Canada and the United States.
