Dr. Daniel R. Nyagawa

Dr. Daniel Rodrick Nyagawa joined Nutrition International in September 2016 as Director of Nutrition International Tanzania. In this role, he oversees Nutrition International Tanzania’s nutrition portfolio by leading program development. He works to raise Nutrition International’s profile by building, maintaining and strengthening relationships with key stakeholders and supports the Government of Tanzania in promoting micronutrient programming for child survival and development, and to improve women’s health.

Daniel is a medical doctor and public health specialist with more than 20 years experience in maternal, newborn, infant and young child nutrition, child health, and control of micronutrient deficiencies. He has expertise in iron deficiency and iodine deficiency disorders, nutrition for people living with HIV/AIDS and prevention of neglected tropical diseases. Daniel has considerable experience in establishing and strengthening linkages between national and sub-national levels of local governments, donor agencies and community partners. He is a skilled facilitator and trainer in health and nutrition-related matters, and has vast experience in policy development and program, human resources and financial management.

Daniel earned his medical degree from the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. He also has a Master of Philosophy in International Community Health from the University of Oslo, Norway, and an MBA from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute in Arusha, Tanzania.

Daniel began his career as the clinical officer at Bulongwa Lutheran Hospital, Njombe region, Tanzania. After an internship at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC), he worked as the General Practitioner, Department of Surgery, at the Mbeya Consultant Hospital in Tanzania, where he also joined the hospital’s academic staff at the Assistant Medical Officers Training Center.

Daniel’s experience includes working at the Department of Community Health and Nutrition, Tanzania Food and Nutrition Center (TFNC), as an epidemiologist; and at the IMA World Health, where he was a country representative and, later on, a consultant and technical advisor. He also worked as the Outreach Director of the Walter Reed Military HIV/AIDS Care Program in Mbeya through HJF Medical Research International.

Prior to joining Nutrition International, Daniel was the Senior Program Manager for the USAID-funded Mwanzo Bora nutrition program, under the Center for Counselling, Nutrition and Health Care (COUNSENUTH).
