Nutrition International Indonesia works to improve health and well-being across Indonesia, as the country aims to meet health challenges and opportunities.
Nutrition International Indonesia’s priority objectives include:
- Increase the number of children receiving vitamin A supplements.
- Help establish and scale up a national program for zinc supplementation as treatment for childhood diarrhoea.
- Increase the number of households consuming adequately iodized salt.
- Increase the number of women receiving iron and folic acid supplements and taking them properly and in a sustained manner.
- Help pilot the fortification of rice with iron.
In Indonesia, Nutrition International works with the Government of Indonesia, UNICEF and SEAMEO-TROPMED University of Indonesia to support the national vitamin A supplementation program.
Nutrition International continues to support twice-yearly vitamin A supplementation through local health services during Vitamin A Months and in conjunction with the country´s immunization program.
We are helping improve planning activity, facilitating refresher training for health staff, and helping improve distribution of the vitamin A capsules, especially to reach the most vulnerable children.
Nutrition International is helping create models for the delivery of zinc supplements with oral rehydration salts for the treatment of childhood diarrhoea.
We are helping to build government commitment and capacity, strengthen the supply chain, support public education about zinc, modify the monitoring system, and support supervision and evaluation of the program.
To help reduce iodine deficiency disorders in Indonesia, we work with small-scale, medium- and large-scale salt processors, local governments and other partners to improve salt iodization levels.
We take a three-pronged approach to our strategy, including quality control, monitoring and enforcement. When pregnant women have enough iodine in their diet through iodized salt, their newborns benefit from healthier brain development.
Nutrition International is providing technical assistance to small scale salt processors in the Bima and Lombok districts of West Nusa Tenggara province. This support includes the provision of mobile iodization units, hand mixers, and hand sprayers.
It also includes helping build, in collaboration with UNICEF, the capacity of the government to enforce the law prohibiting the distribution of non-iodized salt. Nutrition International helped establish a local cooperative of Bima salt farmers to produce labelled iodized salt for distribution through community health centres and local markets.
With the aim of significantly accelerating the production of iodized salt, we are providing technical assistance for upgrading iodization capacity in two of the largest salt processors in East Java, which will boost production of adequately iodized salt in Indonesia considerably. It is anticipated that this activity will benefit an additional 66.7 million people within two years.
We are also providing assistance to some 150 small and medium-scale processors in Java to help them improve the quality of their iodized salt, and are helping raw salt farmers develop business models to improve the profitability of iodization activity.
Iron and Folic Acid
Nutrition International will help to develop viable models for expansion of iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation. This includes helping build capacity within the antenatal care program in health centres, private clinics and hospitals to manage supplementation activity, supporting activity to educate women about the importance of supplementation, and assisting with program evaluation.
A demonstration project in two districts – Lebak and Purwakarta – aims to strengthen the existing IFA supplementation program to improve coverage and utilization rates among pregnant women.
To do so, Nutrition International is focusing on key program areas: quality and availability of IFA supplements; government commitment to the program; training health providers for improved one-on-one and group counseling, and effective monitoring systems. The goal is to replicate this program to additional districts and provinces based on findings from the final evaluation report.
Nutrition International is serving as a technical advisor for a rice fortification pilot project coordinated by Bappenas (National Development Planning Agency) in collaboration with the BULOG (Logistic Affairs Body), the Indonesia Fortification Coalition (KFI) and other institutions.
