The Need

Despite some progress, high rates of undernutrition remain a serious challenge in Ethiopia.

In Ethiopia, undernutrition is evident across the lifecycle. More than one third of children under five are stunted and one out of every 10 children are wasted. Nearly a third of Ethiopian women are malnourished and more than 20% are anaemic. This affects their health and contributes to the intergenerational cycle of undernutrition.

Our Solution

We work to improve the health and nutrition of adolescent girls, women and newborns, and infants and young children.

Since 2005, Nutrition International has worked closely with government and partners to:

  • Assist the Ministry of Health to ensure optimal breast and complementary feeding practices through community involvement and cooking demonstrations
  • Reach more children under two with micronutrient powders
  • Support the Ethiopian Ministry of Health in vitamin A supplementation (VAS) in more than 460 Woredas (districts) through the routine health extension programs. We’ve also covered the vitamin A capsules for the whole country in coordination with UNICEF
  • Scale up the use of zinc and oral rehydration salts to treat diarrhoea
  • Reach adolescent girls with weekly iron-folic acid supplements and boys and girls with nutrition education to combat anaemia
  • Improve the nutritional status of pregnant women and newborns through collaborative quality improvement approach at primary healthcare units
  • Strengthen the ability of salt producers to properly iodize salt and work with partners to enforce universal salt iodization legislation
  • Conduct research that could improve adherence rates of pregnant women taking daily iron and folic acid supplementation
  • Assist the government and policy makers to scale up wheat flour and oil fortification in Ethiopia
