Burden of disease attributable to suboptimal diet, metabolic risks and low physical activity in Ethiopia and comparison with Eastern sub-Saharan African countries, 1990-2015: findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015

The objective of this study is to analyze data related to mortality and disability-adjusted life years associated with child and maternal undernutrition (CMU), dietary risks (DR), metabolic risks (MR) and low physical activity (LPA) in Ethiopia between 1990 and 2015 and compare the results with 14 other sub-Saharan African countries.

Utilizing the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study from 2015, the authors were able to complete a comparative risk assessment to analyze the connection between the disease burden attributed to  CMU, DR, MR and LPA between 15 countries. Spatiotemporal Gaussian Process Regression (ST-GPR) and Bayesian meta-regression models were used to evaluate exposure levels of risk factors.

The study indicated that in Ethiopia from 1990-2015, CMU related diseases declined, however the burden of disease increased for DRs, LPA and MRs.
