Overview

This overview of systematic reviews summarised available effective nutrition-specific and nutrition- sensitive interventions during pregnancy for the outcome of Low Birth Weights (LBW).

By reviewing 23 systematic reviews it was found that oral supplementation with vitamin A, low-dose calcium, zinc, multiple micronutrient (MMN) supplements, nutritional education and preventive antimalarials decreased the risk of LBW.

Improving women’s nutritional status positively affected LBW, and its components (small-for-gestational-age and pre-term-birth). Based on current evidence, MMN supplementation and preventive antimalarial drugs during pregnancy may be considered for policy and practice.
