Isinya, KENYA — On July 29th, Kajiado County took a historic step towards improving the health and wellbeing of its people with the launch of four key frameworks: the County Nutrition Action Plan, the Child Care Policy, the County Food and Nutrition Policy, and Child Care Facility Act. The event, held in Isinya, brought together various stakeholders, including Nutrition International, which has provided support to the county government in the development of the frameworks.
Kajiado County continues to face high levels of hunger and inadequate food supply, leaving many children vulnerable to malnutrition. The county’s 2023 SMART survey reported a stunting prevalence of 21.9% among children under five, with rates rising to 25.2% in rural areas.
“These instruments mark a significant turning point in our collective journey to advance food and nutrition security, strengthen early childhood care systems, and promote holistic wellbeing of every resident of Kajiado,” said H.E. Joseph ole Lenku, Governor of Kajiado County. “[They] are a testament to our steadfast resolve to ensure that every child, every woman and every family has access to nutritious food, quality healthcare and an environment that nurtures growth and dignity.”
The County Nutrition Action Plan (CNAP) embeds nutrition financing into county development planning to increase investments in nutrition, and integrates gender-responsive interventions to address persistent inequalities as well as the socio-cultural and economic barriers that exacerbate malnutrition. Implementing the CNAP’s 12 key result areas will cost Ksh1.2 billion, to be mobilized through partnerships and donor support. Complementing this, the Kajiado County Food and Nutrition Policy provides a framework to harmonize efforts across sectors and strengthen initiatives on food and nutrition security.
“The Food and Nutrition Policy stands as a beacon of multisector collaboration, uniting agriculture, health, education, water, sanitation, gender, trade and social protection,” said Martha Nyagaya, Country Director for Kenya, Nutrition International as she lauded the county’s leadership in institutionalizing nutrition.
Governor Lenku also acknowledged the contribution of partners, including Nutrition International, for supporting the county’s progress. “These achievements, driven by the tireless efforts of my government, the invaluable support of partners such as Nutrition International, UNICEF and the dedication of our communities, are not mere statistics, but stories of lives transformed and futures secured.”
Nutrition International has partnered with Kajiado County since 2016 to strengthen nutrition governance and improve health outcomes. The launch of these frameworks marks a bold step toward tackling persistent challenges and building a healthier future where every resident can reach their full potential.
