WATCH: Motorcycles and maternal health
If you think a group of motorcycle taxis is an unlikely place to find maternal health advocates, think again. In Murang’a County, Kenya, the drivers—many of whom are dads—participate in a father-to-father support group to discuss gender roles and strengthen maternal, newborn and child health in their community.

A motorcycle group supporting maternal, newborn and child health in Kenya
Peter Wanyingi wears many hats. He’s a dad, operates a motorcycle taxi service (known locally as boda bodas), and he’s also the designated leader of his local father-to-father support group. The group is comprised of other motorcycle taxi drivers in his area. When business slows mid-afternoon, the men park their two-wheelers and engage in discussions on gender stereotypes and norms, and ways to increase male engagement in nutrition and caregiving.
The group is guided by community health volunteers, a nutrition coordinator in Kandara Sub-County and the Baba Anzillisha booklet, which highlights 10 steps for dads to consider for a “right start” in maternal and child health. This program was cocreated by Nutrition International, the county government and a focus group of fathers. Watch to see what a day in the life looks like and the important difference groups like Peter’s make.
