The need

Prevalence of anaemia in Tanzania

For many reasons, including poverty and social and cultural barriers, girls and women bear the greatest burden of malnutrition:

  • 47% of adolescent girls are anaemic
  • 57% of pregnant women are anaemic
  • 79% of pregnant women do not consume the minimum recommended amount of iron and folic acid
  • 33% of births are not attended by a skilled birth attendant
  • 92% of children 6 to 23 months of age are not fed an age-appropriate minimum acceptable diet

Our Solution

First 1,000 days

The first 1,000 days from conception to two years of age are critical to the health and development of a child. To make the greatest impact during this important time, our interventions:

  • Improve quality of antenatal care (ANC) offered in the facilities
  • Increase ANC attendance, and consumption of iron-folic acid supplements by pregnant women throughout their pregnancy
  • Provide a package of care for women and newborns at delivery and in the postnatal period
  • Promote exclusive breastfeeding and age-appropriate complementary feeding practices
  • Provide micronutrient powders for children 6 to 23 months of age

Adolescent nutrition

Adolescence is the second greatest time of growth in a child’s life. Good nutrition helps adolescents thrive and learn. Our nutrition interventions include:

  • Reaching in- and out-of-school adolescent girls with a package of nutrition interventions, including weekly iron-folic acid supplementation
  • Nutrition education for both girls and boys

The Impact

Getting children and adolescents the nutrition they need to thrive

Together with partners, we reached children and adolescents with the nutrition they need for proper growth and development, ensuring they could learn, dream, and reach their full potential.
