The opportunity

The Government of Indonesia has demonstrated a commitment to reduce malnutrition rates.

Despite being the largest economy in southeast Asia, Indonesia still faces challenges when it comes to nutrition and child development outcomes. Nationally, 31% of children under five are stunted, with dramatic differences between provinces.

The Government of Indonesia has been working to decrease rates of undernutrition, but there are still large gaps in the availability and provision of basic nutrition services. In 2018, the Government launched the National Strategy to Accelerate Stunting Prevention to ensure better alignment between sectors and national and sub-national programs.

Our solution

Improving nutrition knowledge, practices and policies by working with caretakers, health workers and decision-makers.

BISA supports the government’s national strategy to accelerate stunting prevention by improving nutrition for women and girls before and during pregnancy, and in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life – a critical period for growth and development. In partnership with Save the Children, Nutrition International is working at the household, community, and system levels to ensure positive and sustainable improvements in health and nutrition. We are:

  • Designing information and behaviour change campaigns to shift attitudes and norms at the household level around breastfeeding, water, sanitation and hygiene, adolescent nutrition, and complementary feeding.
  • Targeting in-school adolescent girls with nutrition education and anaemia prevention.
  • Training health workers, supervisory staff and relevant stakeholders to improve their capacity to deliver quality nutrition services.
  • Assisting district and provincial authorities to improve supply chain management to ensure local facilities have the necessary supplies.
  • Developing the capacity of local leaders to plan, budget, strengthen multi-stakeholder coordination and collaboration, and generate evidence.

The Impact

Improved nutrition for children, women and girls

The BISA project will ensure that adolescent girls, pregnant women, caregivers, health workers and decision-makers have the knowledge and tools they need to change behaviour and deliver quality services – improving the health and nutrition of women, children and adolescents and helping the Government of Indonesia realize its goal of eliminating stunting in the country.
