Overview

Vital registration or Civil Registration in India records key life cycle events such as live births, death, fetal death, marriage, divorce, adoption, legitimating of birth, recognition of parenthood, annulment of marriage or legal separation. The Civil Registration System (CRS) is a rich source of data which could be used to generate estimates of fertility and mortality below State level, but due to reporting issues, it is not being used to estimate vital rates.

The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the civil registration and vital statistics data in India which would help to inform estimates for SDGs and other indicators on a regular basis. In this paper, authors compute indicators from CRS data and advocate for enhancing the importance and priority of civil registration system data.
