Overview

The aim of this paper was to review current data on folate status of women of reproductive age.

A review of 8 databases and the World Health Organization Micronutrients Database identified 45 relevant surveys in 39 countries from 2000 to 2014.

It was found that there is limited data on folate status in women of reproductive age globally, and those that are available must be interpreted carefully to account for different assessment techniques and cutoffs values being utilized. It was recommended that future surveys use the microbiologic assay with assay-matched cutoffs to assess folate status.
